Yesterday my youngest treated me to a performance of Lerner and Loewe's Camelot. I've listened to the soundtrack of this musical since I was a teenager, but yesterday was the first time I had ever seen the play.
It was an absolute delight, and I got a kick out of the note in the program asking people not to sing along with the cast (I had a hard with that, and I wasn't the only one!).
Well worth waiting for, and just a wonderful way to spend an afternoon with my sweet girl. Thanks, YD!

Today's funny
I went to Walmart today to get new arch supports. They've got a Dr Scholls machine that is supposed to use sensors to analyze foot problems, and you have to take your shoes off to use it. So I took my shoes off and stood on the platform and hit "Start." Immediately the message popped up on the screen--"You must remove your shoes before using this machine."
LOL my feet are so flat the pressure contour map was pretty much just one color.

Grading jail, 2011 version
It's midterms for my classes, so I am in grading jail this weekend. Fortunately I have relatively small classes this term so it shouldn't take too long to grade them.
This is a weird quarter. In my online class I have one no-show, two who seem to have no clue how to make a graph, a few decent students, and a super-keener who wants to do all the homework in one go. My campus class has a few good students, two foreign students who huddle over an electronic dictionary all through class, and one student who sits in the front row, doesn't take notes, and sleeps. I guess it takes all kinds.
Just got to see Eldest Daughter who was in town on a charity drive. Sigh. I miss her lots. It was wonderful to get a hug in person!

It's a new year, and that means it's time to get back into the swing of things
It's been a long time since I've done any "work work"--between my dad's illness and our Christmas break, my brain has been on hiatus for what seems like forever. But it's time to get back to work, and I started today.
While Spouse made a yummy pot roast for dinner, I got the lecture ready for my online class and uploaded the solutions for the homework. I also read a chapter in a database management text and made some revisions to the project summary page for the next NSF grant. Tomorrow I will have to upload the lecture for Monday's class and do some work on Wednesday's lecture, the paper with RN, and the paper with RKR. Youngest Daughter needs to do some clothes shopping at the mall in the afternoon, as she needs a heavier coat for winter, but I should be able to get some work work accomplished in the morning and evening. The papers are way overdue, so I need to make some significant progress on them within the next week or so. The three NSF grants I am planning are not due until February and May, so we are a bit ahead of the curve on those. Time flies, though, especially where grants are concerned. I've never had one (or known of one) submitted more than a day ahead of the deadline. Usually it's the last minute of the last possible hour!
On the home front, Monday we get a security system put in. That's way overdue, and kind of like putting the cart before the horse; we've already been robbed once. The idea though, is to prevent a second break-in, and a third. Anyway, I am going with a local security firm rather than the ubiquitous ADT. Partly because of cost, but also because the "women and children in danger" commercials ADT airs are offensive and annoying. We females already know our freedom to move about is constrained thanks to predatory males; we don't need to be reminded over and over and over again, on television and in movies. Let's see some men threatened in those ADT commercials for once, shall we?
Okay, enough ranting and let's think about happier stuff, like hobbies. Now that the Christmas embroidery is done, I can go back to the silk and goldwork sampler. I've got the final two colors I need to finish the silk, and started adding pink to the strawberries today.
There are three new projects I would like to start. Once I get the silk done on the sampler, it has to stay home to get the goldwork in (I don't want to schlep so much stuff back and forth to UniTown. I feel like a baglady already). Two of them (the Indian medallion and a secret project) I can take UniTown, so that means one new (Indian dancing girl) and two WIP projects (the sampler and the silk fan) can stay in HomeCity for weekend work. I get about 15-30 minutes a day to work on these things, but it's amazing how that steady plodding adds up. I need to apply the same discipline to REAL work, lol.
The kids gave me space vehicle model kits for Christmas and my birthday, but I don't want to start them until I get to my parents' house. If I do them here, the kitties will scatter those pieces in a nanosecond. I'm going to make my dad help put together the big Lego shuttle model (he has been warned already) and maybe Grand-Niece would like to help with the cast models. She probably has better vision for the painting part.
New Year's resolutions are silly, so I don't make them. I do hope that this year brings tenure, a new job for Eldest Daughter, academic success for all three of my wonderful children, and good health for our family and friends. If there was a property purchase in there too, and a permanent move to UniTown, I wouldn't be unhappy. :-)
